Location, Location, Location
Morrow County is in the eastern portion of Oregon. The Columbia River borders the county's northern end, and the southern part contains a section of the Blue Mountains. The cities included are Boardman (largest city), Heppner (county seat), Ione, Irrigon, and Lexington. As of 2020, the population was 12,186.
Family First
Morrow County School District serves kindergarten through secondary students in all communities. Ione School District is a charter school in their own school district offering K-12 classes.
Together, both school districts provide:
- Small student-to-teacher ratios.
- Various extracurricular activities and sports.
- Valuable community partnerships that center your child in their community's social, recreational, and cultural life.
This rural community education model helps your child develop the skills and self-reliance they need to be successful and responsible citizens. Blue Mountain Community College also provides post-secondary opportunities locally with a campus nearby in Pendleton, OR.
Outdoor Oasis
The surrounding areas have abundant outdoor recreation opportunities for the whole family, including camping, fishing, boating, bird and big game hunting, biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and off-road vehicle riding with a large mountain ATV park nearby.
The Columbia River is renowned for its salmon and steelhead runs. Fishing and boating are the most popular recreational activities on the river, but windsurfing is becoming a popular attraction, especially in the Columbia River Gorge. The Blue Mountains have numerous hiking trails for all levels. Enjoy a short day hike picking huckleberries and morel mushrooms; or an extended backpacking adventure for more skilled outdoor enthusiasts.
Each community has plenty of recreational activities to keep you busy!
In Heppner, you can enjoy a 9-hole golf course, a waterpark with an indoor therapy pool, an indoor exercise gym, a pickleball court, a tennis court, and two city parks.
In Boardman, you will find a 9-hole golf course, an outdoor splash pad, a large indoor pool with a water slide, wading, and a vortex pool at the Pool and Rec Center. The Rec Center also includes a climbing wall, a full-size gymnasium, and a range of exercise and fitness equipment. The Sage Center is an interactive museum and visitor center displaying the agriculture and manufacturing industry integral to this area.
Irrigon includes a marina and family-oriented community park that offers boating from the public access boat ramp, fishing, and space for picnics.
