Swing Bed Care/Rehabilitation

May contain: furniture

"Swing Bed" is a federal designation that allows patients who are not yet physically able to return home to remain in a hospital setting for continued care and rehabilitation. Swing Bed patients at Pioneer Memorial Hospital can receive strengthening therapy and 24-hour skilled nursing care and services for a few days or weeks.  The Swing Bed Program provides a transition for patients and gives them more time to reach optimal health and return to their highest level of function.  Eighty-five percent of our Swing Bed Patients return to independent living.

A Swing Bed patient has many different faces, including those needing:

  • Recovery from major joint replacement
  • Recovery from major surgery or illness
  • Daily physical therapy
  • Specialized wound care
  • IV antibiotics infusions
  • IV pain management
  • To avoid repeated hospitalizations
  • And more

Using specialized therapies and education, under the physicians direction, our care team works to help patients achieve their highest level of function and self-care.  Pioneer Memorial Hospital nursing staff manages the medication and assists with personal hygiene and activities of daily living.  As the patient's condition stabilizes and the rehabilitation potential is reached, most Swing Bed patients can return to their residence. Our average length of stay is two to four weeks.  The length of stay varies, but the quality of care is consistent.

Will insurance cover Swing Bed?

Medicare Part A pays for skilled nursing and therapy services when patients meet Medicare criteria.  Some commercial health insurance policies also provide payment. Our admissions coordinator will guide patients and families through the admission process and verify insurance coverage.

The Swing Bed Program at Pioneer Memorial Hospital has the advantage of access to all hospital amenities, including:

  • Lab
  • Radiology
  • ER
  • Therapy services
  • 24-hour nursing staff
  • Doctors available around the clock.

Patient and Family Roles:

Patients are encouraged to wear street clothes as they complete therapy and participate in activities designed to help them return to optimal health.  The Swing Bed team welcomes families to frequently visit and bring books, games, and hobbies that their loved ones enjoy.

Patients enjoy the comforts of home while the family is comfortable knowing their loved one is receiving the help they need.  Guided by Pioneer Memorial Hospital's caring staff, patients practice activities of daily living such as grooming, dressing, eating, and personal hygiene.
